Top 5 Benefits of an Electric Fireplace

Top 5 Benefits of an Electric Fireplace

Here in Missouri, the weather has already dropped down to freezing. And according to The Weather Channel, it’s bound to keep happening all over the country.

There’s nothing quite like cold weather to make you wish for a fireplace. Fireplaces are wonderful — having the ability to curl up next to one while reading a book or drinking hot chocolate has long been a part of our ideals. But not everyone can afford a steady influx of firewood, and not everyone can lean down and do the manual labor of both building a fire and cleaning up after.

For those who can’t endure the effort of building a wood fire, there’s the electric fireplace. Here are five things you should know about electric fireplaces:

1.  They’re energy efficient.

With a real wooden fireplace, your heat is constantly escaping up a chimney, letting most of the heat out before you can even feel the effects. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency has reported that 90 percent of the fire’s heat is lost to the chimney, along with most of the hot air in the room.

As a result, an electric fireplace is more effective at heating a room, which makes it more energy efficient. With these fireplaces, you don’t have a chimney to account for, and you don’t have much to clean up after (if anything).

2. They’re safe.

Many electric fireplaces have an automatic shut-off function, and remote-controlled access gives you an opportunity to set a timer without worrying about the fireplace overnight.

As an added bonus, electric fireplaces remain cool to the touch, so you don’t have to worry about your pets or any young children getting too close and burning themselves. The only area of the fireplace that will get hot is the area around the heating element or “warm air discharge,” but it generally only gets as warm as a hand dryer.

3. They’re cost-effective.

You’re already saving money by not having to crank up your heater or purchase a ton of firewood. Plus, installing and maintaining a traditional fireplace — from chimney inspection and regular cleaning to knocking out walls and other spaces to make room for the unit itself — is rather expensive.

Electric fireplacess are rather cheap to install, and you don’t have to maintain them with chimney and service checks. And many use LED light bulbs, so you won’t need to worry about making consistent bulb purchases.

4. It’s easy to install one.

Speaking of installing fireplaces, installing an electric fireplace is one of the easiest things you can do. Companies like Fireside Hearth & Home offers a built-in electric fireplace, while other electric fireplaces can be installed as a standard wall mount, a partial recess, or a full recess.

After you have your electric fireplace set up, all you have to do is plug it in and turn it on.

5. Anyone can enjoy them at any time.

You can live anywhere and still enjoy an electric fireplace. This means you don’t have to own your home, and you don’t have to be stressed about the size of your place — some options even work for recreational vehicles!

And as kitschy as it may sound, you can enjoy an electric fireplace without turning on the heat. In other words, if you want the ambiance of a fireplace in the summer, you can turn on the “fire” and leave the heat to the sun.

As you look forward to the icy cold temperatures of the winter, consider your fireplace options. Whether you’re interested in an electric one or not, you can look forward to staying warm this winter while cuddling with a blanket and some hot chocolate next to your new hearth.
